User comment: Fantastic! Settling the argument with my observing friends over which of our sites is better is worth the $5 all by itself. And if I win the wager for a beer, it will be like getting the app for free.

Right now i am working on a brand new International Year of Light version of the Dark Sky Meter app.
This version is aimed at a broad audience. The goal is to collect as many measurements as possible for science and humanity.
The app will be available soon! So stay tuned.

Finally Apple has reviewed the Dark Sky Meter 2.0 App. It took a while this time.
The app contains iOS 8 support and contains a feature to provide updated algorithms over the air take a look at the site here. Thanks for the wait and please
start your update engines!
Clear and dark skies everyone!
I posted the 1.9.9 update to Apple, they will review the app. Whats new?
– iOS 8 Support
– Experimental iPhone 6 support.
– Algorithm improvements outside the app. When we have a better / tuned algorithm for devices, it will be available for everyone instantly (over the air).
What will be in version 2.0?
– Other models (we are testing with iPads and iPods)
– International Year of Light 2015 integration
– Bug fixes and nice enhancements.
We found an undocumented error in iOS8 and have sent a report to Apple. The app doesn’t function as expected with iOS 8. That’s why we temporarily removed it from sale. We will try to workaround the issue.
The app doesn’t support the iPhone 6 yet. The reason is that i don’t have an iPhone 6 to test and calibrate. As with every new device, it will take some time to test, calibrate and implement the camera sensor.
In 2012, i’ve developed the iSPEX iPhone app for Leiden University. With a tiny spectro/polarimeter-add on, you can determine air pollution by sweeping the iPhone to the daytime sky. Thousands of people contributed to science during 2 days of measurement. You can read more on the iSPEX website.
With the dark sky meter you can measure light pollution at night. If you use both apps and own the required optical add on for measuring air pollution you are all set! During daytime you can investigate the air quality and see how it impacts light pollution for example. Do your own research with your own optical laboratory: the iPhone.
You can (voluntarily) submit your Dark Sky Meter readings. Besides the map on this website, the data you provide will be sent to scientists worldwide. Of course, no personal data is collected. Just location, weather and darkness information.
One of the most famous campaigns is called Globe at Night, you probably know it.
They did research on our app and it proved to be very reliable in regression tests along with other devices.
And we are really proud that DSM (that is you!) is providing the majority of measurements (2791)!
Here’s a great infographic.
Also check out the beautiful Globe at Night website. We will join forces during the 2015 year of light!
Alongside the old map, the new map should perform a little better and best: it is live. The map is updated automatically every 10 minutes.. The map will give you a quick view about light and dark areas. See for yourself! And comments are very welcome.
